Founded in 1988 by 24 pioneering rice millers in Kalmunai
Our 38-Year Co-operative Heritage in the Gal Oya Valley
The Kalmunai Rice Millers Co-operative Society Ltd (Reg. No. EP/KM/COOP/RM-1988/042) was established in 1988 during a transformative era for Eastern Province agriculture. Situated at the crossroads of the fertile Ampara and Batticaloa paddy-growing districts, small and medium-scale millers faced severe challenges in accessing working capital, modern drying machinery, and fair wholesale distribution channels.
By pooling resources under the Co-operative Societies Law of Sri Lanka, our founding members built the region’s first shared grain testing facility and collective paddy storage complex. Over nearly four decades, our society has grown to represent 185+ active Category-A, Category-B, and emerging modern rice mills, processing over 240,000 metric tons of paddy annually across the Maha and Yala cultivation seasons.
